Reportedly Many Columbian Mammoth skeletons have been discovered with-in Old Greer County, along with a hunter’s village from 830 B.C., the 1800s Great Western Cattle Trail, & the 1900s arrival of The Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, followed by many other rail lines.

Greer County was governed as part of Texas from 1860 to 1896 when a U.S. Supreme Court decision made it part of the OK Territory. Oklahoma has been under 14 different flags before statehood in 1907. The Museum is located on 1800s Ghost & Mobeetie Trails along with the 1917 Ozark Trail & had its beginning as the Border-McGregor Hospital in 1907. Quickly out grown as a hospital it became the Jefferson Hotel in 1908. However, Mangum’s need for a hospital, a two-story southern addition was added to the building around 1912 & another addition of a top floor & the three-story west wing in 1929. Dr. Border’s frame as a physician & goiter specialist attracted patients from a wide area. He also created teaching hospital & added the first “Air Ambulance” in OK & possibility the United States.

A place to go back in country way of livving.

The next occupants of the building were young women of the National Youth Administration (NYA) project. their sponsor & house mother was Mary McGregor, wife of Dr. Frank McGregor. It was active until World War II required the services of both the teachers and their students. In 1948, the Baptists purchased and operated the “Southwest Baptist Hospital” for 17 years before selling it to the City of Mangum in June 1965. The city moved the hospital facilities to a new location in 1967. In 1973, the city leased the building to The Old Greer County Museum and Hall of Fame Inc.

Sorry... I'm a part of this.... We are doing. A great job... Texas will still be a part of Southwestern Oklahoma.... Working hard to keep this history alive... Getting better every day... Great day trip.... L8R
